Afew years ago, we had the most wonderful move of God break out in a Church in Northern Michigan. The Spirit of God moved so powerfully night after night, we ended up holding meetings for six months! Pastors were restored to the ministry, so many lives were healed, restored and mightily impacted by the Spirit of God. From here people went out into the nations spreading the fire and power of the Holy Spirit.
The name of the Church was the Burning Bush Tabernacle. Truly a Burning Bush from heaven burned in that place transforming and changing lives! With thoughts of that wonderful outpouring in mind, I want to spend a few moments today talking about the Burning Bush that Moses encountered and how it applies to our lives today.
Exodus 3:2-4 says “There the Angel of the Lord appeared to him (Moses) in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. So Moses thought ‘I will go and see this strange sight – why the bush does not burn up?’ When the Lord saw that He had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’ And Moses said ‘Here I am.’
What a sight that burning bush must have been to Moses. He could see this was a special kind of fire, not a regular natural fire because while the bush appeared to be burning, it was not being consumed by the fire! This was the fire of the Holy Spirit burning and it drew the attention of Moses! And this was God’s intention to draw him; whenever the fire of God burns it draws people.
The great Evangelist and founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley said, “Get yourself set on fire with enthusiasm and people will come for miles to watch you burn!” When the fire of God burns it draws people like a moth to a flame! Now there was nothing particularly special about the bush. I’ve studied to try and determine whether there was anything significant about it and in my studies, I have determined the reason that it was significant was because it was not significant!
God delights in taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. He delights in taking the natural and transforming it into something supernatural! In the original Hebrew language all it says about this bush is that it was a bush. Now with you and I, many times we feel this way when it comes to God. We say “How can God use somebody like me, sometimes I feel so insignificant.” Well today I want to encourage you, if you are feeling that way… you are the perfect candidate for the fire of the Holy Spirit!
Then of course, God Himself began to speak to Moses out of that bush giving him instructions to deliver an entire nation from bondage. That insignificant bush carried the significant presence and fire of the Holy Spirit. It carried a significant message; it’s no small assignment to be asked to deliver an entire nation from bondage to the most powerful nation on the planet!
This fire was a purifying, purging fire. It was a fire of deliverance! It was a fire of miracles! It was a fire of holiness! It was a fire of God’s passionate love for His people. It was ultimately the tangible fire and manifest Presence of God Almighty Himself! As God began to speak to Moses from that bush that fire transferred to him.
Moses carried that fire into the very heart of the most powerful nation; to the feet of the most powerful ruler of the day, with a message from God Almighty to “Let my people go!” And of course today, that Burning Bush is Jesus Christ Himself. Revelation 1:14 says “His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like a blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace and His voice was like the sound of rushing waters.”
Today I want to encourage you, as a believer in Jesus Christ that you have a Burning Bush living on the inside of you! Maybe you feel a little discouraged today, you need to know that God can and will do significant things in and through your life! You are called to significance! You may not feel like it, but God has plans to use you to do great things. I can give countless testimonies of people who have encountered God’s tangible presence and power in our meetings, going on to see mighty things take place where ever they have gone.
When Moses encountered that Burning Bush, He was a broken man. He had been a great Prince and a ruler, but he was a man humbled by lifes’ circumstances. God used all these things to show Moses that you don’t have to be a great Prince for God to use you, you can be a lowly Shepherd, working away in the back blocks of the desert. Maybe that is how you feel today, I want to encourage you, don’t give up, I am praying that you will have a mighty fresh encounter with Jesus Christ the burning man; Jesus Christ, the Burning Bush!
