Did everything come from nothing? The study of the origins of life remains a topic for ongoing debate. I recently watched an interview where the famous Atheist and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins was asked, “How did life, as we know it, come into being?” He replied “By a very slow process.” He was then asked, “How did it start?” He replied “Nobody knows how it started, we know the kind of event it must have been … we know it started with the first self replicating molecule, but we don’t know how that happened.”

The respected Atheist then went on to postulate that, perhaps at some point, an alien life form may have deposited a seed of life, which contained a signature, which may be recognizable, but this would have had to have been from a concrete measurable alien species, not some supernatural Supreme Intelligent Designer.

Mr Dawkins is not too fond of the Christian faith, his view is that it is very freeing to be released from the shackles of ‘primitive superstitions.’ All I can say is, it’s a good thing that God believes that Mr Dawkin’s exists. Where did everything come from? Well Mr Dawkins is basically saying, “We don’t know.” I appreciate his honesty, but it still leaves us with an unresolved mystery. Science, it seems, can explain many things, but not everything. This debate regarding the origins of life, the evolution versus creation debate strikes at the heart of all we are and believe as Christians.

As an Evangelist, to be honest with you, I feel that this is the real battleground for the hearts and minds of the western world at least. We can debate and work to convince others of their sin before a holy God, and their need of a Savior; this is very important. However, the foundation of our faith lies in the belief that God exists. Take the existence and reality of God out of the equation and people lose their entire frame of reference.

The Big Bang theory, regarding the origins of the Universe, put’s forward a theory of how the Universe may have developed and formed, but leaves us with no certainty regarding where the elements, regarding the Big Bang, came from. Random acts of evolutionary development over the millennia are the current scientific explanation for at least the development of life as we know it.

Current science and evolutionary theories can take us back as far as a big bang, the first self replicating molecule, primordial mud, but the issue of where all these things came from remain a mystery. I should probably say at this point that these theories are all just theories, they are not set in stone as some might suggest and continue to be open for debate.

In my view, science paints a fairly bleak and meaningless view of our human existence. There are mysteries to consider which science does not have an explanation for such as, the seeming intrinsic weaving of intelligent design in nature; emotions such as love, joy, hope and peace; the intricate balance of the universe required to sustain life.

The human conscience tells us what is right and wrong, why is that? Finally there are millions of people throughout history have claimed to have had their lives changed by Christ. They claim to have encountered a spiritual, heavenly dimension which has altered the course of their lives.

These are mysteries and questions of course that God has put in place for every person to answer for themselves. As far as God is concerned He has put all these things in place as questions which require an answer. An answer which point us in His direction so that we are without excuse, when it comes to the question of His existence. Romans 1:20 tells us: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

The truth is that Christians believe the same thing as evolutionists, in relation to one issue. We both believe that everything came from nothing. Richard Dawkins believes that all we see came to be by an evolutionary process, but is unsure of the origins. Christians believe that all we see came into being when God spoke and at that point, nothing became everything. (Genesis 1)

Colossians 1:16-17 tells us “For by Him (Jesus) all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

One could argue the greatest miracle of all is the miracle of Creation. Albert Einstein said, “There are two ways to live your life, one is as though nothing is a miracle; the other is as though everything is a miracle.” And truly, every time we consider the beauty and splendor of this world and the universe, we need to remember it is a great miracle of God. Today, I want to encourage you, if God created the whole Universe with a few words, He can do a miracle in your life.

Deuteronomy 8:2-3 tells us “Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.”

The wilderness is a place where not much happens, it is a barren place, but God sustained an entire nation for forty years from nothing other than His word. Even in the toughest times of our lives, God is wanting us to have a total dependence on Him; His character and His Word. God wants to create something out of nothing in your life. He wants to sustain you and take care of you, in spite of everything you face.

Science may tell the world that everything evolved from random acts of nature over the millennia, but the Bible tells us everything is infused with the fingerprints of a loving Creator, God. A God of beauty, purpose and destiny, who has plans to prosper you and give you hope and a wonderful future (Jeremiah 29:11). Be encouraged today, you have the Creator of the Universe watching over your entire life with loving care.
